In addition to coming across the World Flight manuscript and related materials, Tiffany also happened upon one of Trixie’s old lectures on tape—this one given to the American Association for University Women in Whitter, CA—regarding her time behind the Iron Curtain in 1961. Curious to understand the experience better, Tiffany also transcribed this lecture from tape cassette to text (a real challenge due to its poor quality of recording).
What did she learn? As an Associated Press correspondent, Trixie traveled through Germany to Poland, Russia, and Czechoslovakia with 26 high-ranking military officials to expose how people were being controlled by propaganda, disinformation, and fear under Communist rule. To accept the assignment, Trixie not only had to hold a pilot’s license, but she needed to learn how to speak both German and Russian in advance of her trip.
